An Evening Stroll at Burridge

(by Joan Millard)

Ever felt that you didn’t know anything about anything? Then take a walk with Martin Drake! Ever felt that you would like to know a little more about insects? Then take a walk with Martin Drake. A very select few of us met at Burridge and Martin took us on a walk onto the Common, pointing out little holes on some leaves and little insects on other leaves.

We walked through ‘squidge’, kick sampled a little stream, where we found a little Bullhead fish and lots of Mayfly larvae. Elsewhere we found a Dark Bush Cricket, a Yellow Fly on burdock, a Picture-wing Fly on thistle, and very many Soldier Beetles (Bonking Beetles) on Hemp Agrimony.

Insect life abounds and I shall never again look at a hole in a leaf and think ‘oh, that’s just a hole’. It won’t be!
